What is a peptide? A plain explanation
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids joined end to end by peptide bonds; longer chains that fold into shapes are usually called proteins.

Plain-language pages on peptides and the Canadian rules. Every page quotes its sources and shows the day it was last checked.

Three pages in order. After them you know what a peptide is, what Canada says about it, and how to check a product.

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids joined end to end by peptide bonds; longer chains that fold into shapes are usually called proteins.
The science · 4 min
Peptides and proteins are both chains of amino acids. The difference is mostly length and shape, and the exact line is a convention. United States rules for biological products write a number down: a defined chain of more than 40 amino acids is a protein.

A synthetic peptide sample holds the target chain plus close relatives made along the way: chains with an amino acid missing or added, short capped chains, mirror-image forms, and chains changed by oxidation or other reactions. Purity testing measures how much of each there is.
The science · 4 min
Most synthetic peptides are built one amino acid at a time on a solid support, then cut free, purified by chromatography and usually freeze-dried. Each step can leave by-products, which is why purity and identity are tested afterwards.
The rules · 5 min
In Canada the phrase has a defined meaning only in medical-device guidance, the drug rules contain no research-use exemption, and Health Canada says the label does not make peptide products legal.
The rules · 5 min
The Prescription Drug List names the medicinal ingredients that make a product a prescription drug in Canada, several peptides are on it by name, and a peptide missing from it is not authorized for sale just because the list leaves it out.
The rules · 5 min
Canadian rules allow only a short list of people to import a prescription drug, and Health Canada says peptides are generally regulated as prescription drugs.
The rules · 4 min
Semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide, exenatide and dulaglutide are on Health Canada's Prescription Drug List by name. Health Canada says only licensed pharmacies can legally sell prescription drugs, and in January 2026 it warned about unauthorized GLP-1 products sold in stores and online.

A DIN is the eight-digit number Health Canada assigns to an authorized drug, and you can check one by searching Health Canada's Drug Product Database.
The rules · 6 min
Health Canada says peptides are generally regulated as prescription drugs, so they may be sold to the public only by someone allowed to dispense them, such as a pharmacist, on a prescription, only certain people may import them, and a research-use label does not change that.
The rules · 5 min
Canadian law defines advertising very widely, limits what may be said to the public about a prescription drug to its names, price and quantity, bars health claims for listed diseases, and bars any misleading impression. Health Canada says peptides are generally regulated as prescription drugs.
Quality · 5 min
A purity figure is the share of the main peak in a chromatogram, usually from HPLC. It tells you how much of the sample is the target peptide compared with related impurities, not what the powder weighs or whether a product may be sold.
Quality · 4 min
Purity compares the target peptide with related impurities. Content, or assay, says how much of the powder's weight is the peptide itself, after water and the counter-ion are counted. A powder can be highly pure and still be well under 100% peptide by weight.

Identity answers whether a sample is the peptide named on the label. Mass spectrometry measures the molecule's mass and can confirm its sequence; amino acid analysis, peptide mapping and retention time are other checks a certificate may cite.
Quality · 6 min
A certificate of analysis reports test results for one batch. Check the batch number, each test with its limit and its actual number, identity by mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, how content is expressed, and who signed it.
Quality · 5 min
Health Canada's own checks come first: a DIN on the label, a listing in the Drug Product Database, and a seller who can lawfully sell a prescription drug. Then the quality checks: a certificate matched to the batch, with real numbers, a date, a signature and a traceable maker.

Synthetic peptides are isolated with a counter-ion, a salt partner. Acetate is the usual one for medicines; trifluoroacetate (TFA) and chloride also occur. The counter-ion adds weight that is not peptide, so it should be named and measured.
News · 3 min
On 7 May 2026 Health Canada published a Type I recall of two peptide powders, saying the products sold were unauthorized active pharmaceutical ingredients. The notice files the recall under drugs.
News · 6 min
On 9 April 2026 Health Canada warned that peptides sold online without authorization are illegal, that research-use labels do not change that, and named products it had seized.

In 2025 Health Canada published at least three advisories about peptide drugs it had not authorized: products seized from a wellness centre in April, products sold by an online seller in April, and products seized and sold by another online seller in August. All three say these peptides are regulated as prescription drugs.

Health Canada's 29 July 2026 statement describes a permanent injunction against a Canadian online seller of peptides, reaching its sales and its advertising.

Handling · 4 min
A storage condition only means something if it is measured and written down. Health Canada's guidance for drugs asks for monitoring at the right spots, calibrated devices, records of readings and alarms, and a written decision after any excursion.
Handling · 4 min
Keep a freeze-dried peptide cold, dry, dark and sealed, as its label states. Medicines regulators describe peptides as usually stored refrigerated or frozen, and as powders that take up water from the air, so moisture control matters as much as temperature.
Handling · 5 min
Shelf life is the time a material is expected to stay within its specification when stored as its label says. For medicines' ingredients it rests on stability data and is shown as an expiry or retest date. Without a date and a storage condition, there is no shelf life to read.
Handling · 4 min
Every container should say what it is, which batch it came from, how to store it and when to retest it, in ink that lasts. Behind the label sits a record: where the batch came from, where it went, and how long the papers are kept.
“This type of labelling does not make these products legal or exempt from regulatory requirements.”
